Film: "Agneepath"; Starring: Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Om Puri; Written and Directed by Karan Malhotra; Rating: ****

Long before the damsel in the den Katrina Kaif signs her writhe petition 'junta ke naam', the film's imposing villain and by extension the film, have written their destiny. In bold bloodied letters. E-mail didn't exist in the 1990s.

Sanjay Dutt as Kancha lording over a no-man's-land called Mandwa where the only law that exists is lawlessness is so formidable in his vile antics, you fear for the hero, a decent bloke with eyes that tell a million untold stories.

Hrithik Roshan opts for a perfectly-tuned low-pitched performance to offset Sanjay Dutt's larger-than-life diabolism. The combination of the flamboyant and the understated works.

This is Agneepath Retold or Agneepath Deconstructed. Either way, the revenge formula never seemed more rousing in its invocation of Good and Evil in their most elementary avatars.

Debutant writer-director Karan Malhotra has chosen to restructure one of the most complex but unsuccessful Amitabh Bachchan starrer. The plot leaps at you through its sanguinary design, building brick by brick an edifice of low-life and high-drama.

This new-rage "Agneepath" retains the core of Mukul Anand's failed drama. And yes, it retains Harivnansh Rai's "Agneepath" poem, though, alas, we don't get to hear Amitabh Bachchan recite the lines.

Karan Malhotra's script alters many of the original's dramatic moments, adds new characters (most notable among them, Rishi Kapoor's Rauf Lala), and finally fine-tunes and assimilates the plot's subliminal statement on crime and retribution to a pitch where we often hear the screaming protests of social inequality through the protagonist's pain-lashed expressions of angst, disgust and rebellion rather than his words.

Hrithik Roshan opts for a subdued interpretation of his vengeful character where he could've easily been larger-than-life. He lets Sanjay Dutt take charge of the blizzard of the bravura.

Sanjay Dutt is delightfully in form. During the "Chikni chameli" song when he quizzes the newly-arrived Mandwa-resident Vijay on why he's where he is, Sanjay's eyes go from the molten to the melting...His best in years.

But the finest performance comes from Rishi Kapoor. Playing a loathsome flesh trader and drug dealer who takes Vijay under his wings, he delivers a bludgeoning homage to skin-crawling villainy. A glorious departure from his lover-boy image.

The prolonged sequence where Hrithik Roshan takes on Rishi Kapoor is the single-most riveting episode of filmed violence in Indian cinema since Gabbar Singh's mayhem over the Thakur's family in Sholay.

"Agneepath" works so wonderfully within its high-voltage 'masala maad-dhaad' genre because of the actors who instinctively grasp the street-level gut-wrenching grammar of Malhotra's storytelling.

Barring Priyanka Chopra who seems strangely cosmetic in a land of looming credibility, every character shines through the crime-drama maze.

The action sequences by Abbas Ali Mogul convey rawness. Every blow that Hrithik Roshan so manfully receives on his chin makes you flinch. You wait for him to give back as good as he gets.

This is not a film for the faint-hearted. Its basic structure and the leitmotif of the 'tree of death' (where Vijay Chauhan's father was hanged and where his wrongdoer will finally meet his nemesis) draw audiences into a vortex of viciousness and sadism.

This is a dark brooding world; this is a world where the laws of retribution and redemption are re-written according to who rules the underworld. This is "Agneepath" where the poet gets hanged and the pervert gets promoted.

Karan Malhotra revels in the language of commercial Hindi cinema. The characters in Vijay's chawl are all good-hearted. Every character in Kancha's kingdom is a creep or a coward. The battle lines are tightly drawn. The pace is breakneck.

The mob scenes of violence and religion often merge on the streets of Mumbai and in the lawless backwaters of the imaginary Mandwa. The narrative features a Gokul Ashthami matki-breaking sequence at the start and a Ganesh visarjan sequence towards the end, both shot spectacularly on Mumbai streets.

The background music is a suitable banshee of memories and pain. Since Hrithik Roshan has chosen the language of understatement to portray the wronged wounded social outcast Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, it is up to the eloquence-level of the soundtrack to supplement the hero's stunning silences.

Every component of the film falls into place, with a resounding thump. "Agneepath" is brilliant in its brutality. It's a riveting and hectic homage to the spirit of the cinema when revenge reigned supreme. And content was King. This new "Agneepath" takes us back to the era when there was no computer or cellphones. And communication with the audience was immediate and electrifying.

Relive that tingling sensation of watching the hero get his groove back. In gory detail.

The item girl flaunts a not-so-toned back in this siren red number. We love her attitude, but the dress? Nah!

Kashmera Shah is staying true to her bold and outrageous image. After coming out with a bare-all calender recently, the actor fights off accusations about going under the surgeon’s knife and photoshopping parts of her body to create the hot look for her calendar

There have been murmurs about how the quirky Kashmera Shah has gone under the brush to get her hot look in the recent calendar, and the actor is definitely not amused by all this talk. “Only the backgrounds have been photoshopped. And in some places the colour of my hair. Neither did we add any abs nor did we remove any flab to make me look thinner than I am. I have worked out for months and lost a lot of weight to prepare for the photoshoot. So no one can take the credit away from me,” says Kashmera. The sexy actress feels that the top female stars need to push the envelope when it comes to doing shoots. “When I watch the songs and photoshoots done by top stars, I feel they are very talented and that they can do so much better! They don’t really push the envolope. I wanted to do a bold, edgy and outrageous calendar as that is who I am! I have done over 40 films. I have survived in the industry for 10 years not because of my controversies! I am an actor first and then an item girl or whatever else. At least, I don’t have silicon breasts like others. Mine are natural!” she says, in her inimitable bold way. Is a certain Rakhi Sawant listening?

Karan Johar’s remake of his father’s hit film starring Amitabh Bachchan releases a day after Hrithik’s debut film did in 2000. Will this spell success for Hrithik, likeKaho Naa…Pyaar Hai did?

Bollywood has always been influenced by a wave of superstitious beliefs. Some think that fetishes can help conceal a bad script, while others resort to the plain numbers game. Perhaps resorting to the same idea, the makers of the Agneepath remake have postponed the release date of the movie to January 13, which is as close as they could get to the date of hero Hrithik Roshan’s first release, Kaho Naa…Pyaar HaiKNPH had hit the screens on January 14, and since then Hrithik has been grooving through the labyrinths of B-town, headed steadily upwards, even though some of his releases bombed at the BO. The remake ofAgneepath is a huge affair, considering every actor in the movie - especially Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt – has to live up to the benchmark created by the original. We can just imagine Karan Johar biting his otherwise well-manicured nails and thinking of innovative ways to create the much needed noise for this one. What’s interesting is when people in B-town resort to an amalgamation of marketing and superstitious tactics for the success of their films. So all we can do is wait and watch if the strategy to recreate Hrithik’s magic works for the movie. Eventually we all know that the super formula for any film to work at the BO is its ability to strike a chord with the masses. After a while, marketing tools and sacred good luck charms, number games and altered spellings all go down the drain….

Still no relief for director Prakash Jha. The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked Jha to make Uttar Pradesh chief secretary as party in the case.

Jha's counsel Ameet Naik told TOI, "Judge has asked us to make Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary as party in the case."

It maybe recalled here that Prakash Jha moved Supreme Court on Friday challenging the ban on his film 'Aarakshan' in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab.

However, as the day wore on, it was clear that it was the viewers who had reservations going to theatres, fearing trouble. Jha failed to get interim relief to lift the ban on the film before its release.

Pakistan born and UK based filmmaker Faisal Aman Khan has taken initiative to do a feature film on former Pakistan Cricketer Imran Khanwho is considered to be one of the living legends in the world of cricket.

The movie based on the former cricket star's life, which is still in post-production phase, explores the experiences of a man who dedicates his life to his country while also struggling with personal and spiritual anguish.

Faisal Aman Khan , a young filmmaker who had never planned his career to get into film making came with the idea of making this movie two years back. Faisal Aman Khan speaks exclusively to DT from his hometown in Islamabad and shares with us all the details.

Says Faisal, "I was born in Pakistan, later my family shifted to UK where I pursued my higher studies. My family was not supportive with my idea of geeting into film making. So as back up I did completed my studies in Business media after which I pursued a course in filmmaking in London." So how did the idea of making a movie on former cricketer Imran Khan came up and he states, "I mainly do a lot of documentary films this would be my first venture into feature filmmaking. I always like to work on subjects that are different and can grab mass attention. It was then I decided that I should film a movie on Khan saab. Imran Khan has been one of the most popular cricketer and a legend in history of cricket all over the globe. I had to do an intense two year research on him before I actually started the movie. I have met Imran at several occasion and when I told him about making the movie he just laughed at me. He is a very quite and shy person and was happy to know that I was making a movie on him. Imran was reluctant at first but later after reading the script he got convinced."

Talking about the movie , Faisal highlights, "The movie is basically a tribute of lifetime to Imran Khan. It is a multi language film - Hindi, Urdu and English. We all have known Imran as a cricketer, but my movie focuses on his life after cricket. What happened to Imran Khan after he left cricket? Imran's marriage with Jemima Khan and later what problems aroused in his relationships with Jemima? Why did he enter politics and so on. The movie talks about Imran's journey in his life and the entire transformation of a person from on field to off field. The movie will definitely have a global appeal and there are few personalities in Pakistan who have been able to do so and Imran Khan for sure is one of them."

Faisal further adds, "The story centers on how Khan's disappointment at Pakistan's dismal state of affairs triggered him to enter the political arena. He also juxtaposes Khan's struggle for Pakistan's future with that of Mohammad Ali Jinnah's. The film also recreates scenes of major incidents such as his hunger strike while in jail, his arrest at Punjab University in Lahore, and then certain intimate scenes with his ex-wife, Jemima Khan."
The shooting of the film is completed and now the movie is in the post production phase. "We are planning to release the movie soon. I plan to screen it all over the globe." Any plans to screen the movie in India and he adds, "Yes why not, I would love to screen the movie in India too. Both my paternal and maternal sides are from India, unfortunately I have never got the chance to visit India till now. It will be a great moment for me if I get the opportunity to visit India soon and do the screening my movie kaptaan there." Ask about his family connection in India and he says, " My father side is from Azamgarh and my mother side is from Lucknow. We have lot of relatives still staying there in India."

Talking about the lead actors in the movie he says, "It was tough for us to select someone who could play the role of Imran and Jemima. As the story centrally focuses on Imran's relationship with Jemima there was lot of pressure on hiring a character for the suitable role. We had to do lot of auditions. Finally we selected a Pakistan based model Abdul Mannan for the role of Imran khan and Saeeda Imtiaz a Pakistan - American based model from NewYork."

Both are fresh faces and they had to really work hard for nearly 6 months starting from looks to accents facial expression and so on. Abdul who has played the role of Imran in the movie had to grow his hair and change his entire look for the movie. Frankly while selecting the main lead actor we didn't want someone who exactly looks like Imran but someone who can act and give justice to the role. Also Saeeda who will be playing the role of Jemima Khan has to work hard on her looks and appearance. Jemima Khan as all of us have known her is a lady who was beautiful graceful and elegant. Honestly speaking the movie was made in a hoe string budget. We did lot of the movie shooting in Pakistan and winded up the shooting in 30 days time. The support we got from the local people in Pakistan was amazing."

"I hope to release the movie by month of October this year. The music of the movie is catchy and we have roped in all local bands and singers from Pakistan who have lend their voices to the movie like Noorie band and so on. What is more interesting, Imran Khan has love for music and has been a great fan of late Ustaad Nusraat Fateh Ali Khan hence for the background scores we have included two songs of late Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan songs - 'Sanu ekh pal chain na aawe' and 'Yeh jo Halka Halka' for the movie," adds Faisal.

Finally he winds up saying, "I strongly believe that nothing is impossible in making your dreams come true and this was one my dream project which hopefully should come true."
