2012:Top places to visit in

Posted by Stanly Stephen | 17:34 | , | 0 comments »

How to get truly, deeply into a year of travel

Factor in your holiday allowance, the cost of flight plus hotel and the various weddings and baptisms you will inevitably have to attend, and your visit time in 2012 is anything but unlimited.

So here are seven places that should come top of your 2012 trip list.

1. Yeosu, Korea

The spectacular uninhibited Baek-do archipelago in Yeosu.

"The Living Ocean and Coast" is the hopeful theme of this year's marine-focused World Expo (May 12-August 12) being held in Korea's coastal city of Yeosu.

From a distance, the event's plankton mascots and sub-themes like "Preservation and Sustainable Development of the Ocean and Coast" and "New Resources Technology" seem straight out of a grad school syllabus -- but look closer and this one promises to be one of the most stylish and sophisticated World Fairs yet.

The event is expected to draw 100 participating countries, and to wow eight million visitors with floating pavilions, dazzling offshore multi-media shows, a vast Ocean Experience Park representing life in the world's five major oceans, and various forms of architectural grandeur (including a mock-up, high-tech, coastal city of 2050) all supporting the idea that human prosperity is inextricably tied to a healthier planet.

2. Antarctica

Turn off your engines and visit Antarctica.

In the final, seventh episode of the BBC nature documentary series "Frozen Planet," viewers are witness to what's considered "the largest recent natural event on our planet" -- the collapse of the Jamaica-sized Wilkins Ice Shelf in Antarctica.

No matter where you stand on climate change, the White Continent is incontrovertibly, irreversibly changing.

And maybe it's really time to see it without the David Attenborough narration. Huge tabular iceberg "graveyards," frenzies of wild penguins and the most pristine, otherworldly landscape available without a rocket ship are all here.

Quark Expeditions (www.quarkexpeditions.com) runs several up-close Antarctica journeys, including voyages to the continent's remote east coast, rare penetrations inside the Antarctic Circle and an "Introduction to Antarctica" trip that covers all the basics for under US$4,000.

3. Poland and Ukraine

The National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland.

Who doesn't love a major sporting event with "crazy road trip" written all over it?

Euro 2012 (June 8-July 1) -- the 14th European Football Championship -- looks like just the ticket. UEFA's big tournament has decided it's time for something different, with the usual sites of France, England and the like giving way to stadiums in Poland and Ukraine.

That's the farthest "out" this tournament has ever ventured, or likely ever will. All games will be split between eight cities -- four in each country -- with quarter-final and semi-final games in Warsaw and Kiev (which will host the final).

Ticket sales have been feverish since last spring, but fans can log onto the Euro 2012 site's "Tour Operator Programme" to purchase all-inclusive packages from UEFA-licensed tour operators.

4. Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii

Aerial view of the new memorial building that straddles the sunken USS Arizona battleship.

Last year's US$56-million Pearl Harbor Visitor Center project, featuring a new museum, movie theaters and exhibits on a redone seven-hectare campus, makes Hawaii's assemblage of historic naval vessels even more visit-worthy.

Highlights include the deck of the 45,000-ton USS Missouri (aka the site of Japan's surrender), the cramped quarters of the USS Bowfin Submarine and the wreckage of the USS Utah from a viewing platform on Ford Island.

The most arresting site lies offshore at the commemorative and newly refurbished USS Arizona Memorial, situated over a sunken battleship that entombed 1,177 Marines and sailors in its hull.

The restored offshore memorial structure stretching over the huge, shadowy wreck makes its re-debut on May 28 (Memorial Day), marking the 50th anniversary of the monument's opening day.

Bangalore, Jan 4 (ANI):restaurant in Bangalore is witnessing large footfalls, since the debut of their latest delicacy, a gold-plated dosa, which is priced at a whooping Rs. 1,011.
One of the restaurateurs chanced upon the idea of creating these unusual delicacies, when he was surfing on the Internet for strategies to make his eatery stand out among other city's food outlets.
"I wanted to do something in restaurant business, so I thought why can't we do something different, so when I once saw in a television channel that they are using gold foils for pizzas and ice creams, which cost 1000 dollars, thought why can't we get this to Bangalore and use it on something else?" said Chandan Lokesh, owner of the restaurant.
Priced at an exorbitant rate, the dish is roasted crisp with a hint of olive oil and has a filling of mashed potatoes, in addition to the gold foil for the finishing touch.
The restaurant also serves a dosa covered with a silver foil, at an affordable price of Rs. 151.
According to media reports, the marketing strategy by owners has made the gold dosa a huge success.
"I got to know about this through my friends that they sell gold dosa over here and I wanted to try it. After I tried it, I liked it so much that I am eating it for the fourth time and I want others also to come and try here and this is ISO certified dosa, it's really good for the health," said Nagashree, a resident.
The owners have planned to patent the gold dosa in the future.

Tourism is travel for recreational

Posted by Stanly Stephen | 09:11 | , | 0 comments »

Tourism is travel  for recreational , leisure or businesspurpose . The world Tourism Organization defines tourists as people  who “travel to and stay in places outsidetheir usual  environment for more thantwenty (24) hours and not more than once consecutive year for leisure  business and other purposes not  related to  the exercise of an activity  remunerated from within the place visited”
Theobald (1994 ) suggested thatetymologically, the word  tour is derivedfrom the Latin,’ tornare’ and the Greek ‘tornors’ meaning ‘a lathe or circle ,the movement around  a central point oraxis’ . This meaning changed in modern English to represent ‘ones’ turn . Thesuffix-ism is defined as an action or process ; typical behavior  or quality , while the suffix –ist denotes‘one that performs a given action’. When the word tour and suffix-ism and- istare   combined, they suggest the actionof movement around a circle.  One can arguethat circle represents a starting point, which ultimately   returns back to its beginning. Therefore likea circle, a tour represents a journey in that it is a round trip. ie the act ofleaving and then returning to the original starting point , and therefore, onewho takes such  a journey can be called atourist”
In 1941. Hunziker and Krapf defined tourism aspeople who travel “ the sun of the phenomena and relationships arising  from the travel and  stay of non-residents, insofar  as they do not lead to permanent residenceand are not connected  with my earningactivity ”. In 1976, the Tourism Society of England’s definition was , Tourism is the temporary, short-term movementof people to destination outside the Places were  they normally live and work and theiractivities during the stay at each destination. It includes movement for allpurposes”.  In 1981, the International Associationof Scientific Experts in Tourism defined tourism in terms of particularsactivities selected by choice   andundertaken outside at home.
In 1904, the United Nations classified three forms oftourism in its Recommendations on Tourism statistics.
Ø Domestictourism involving non-residents traveling in the given Country.
Ø Inboundtourism involving non-residents travels in the given country.
Ø Outboundtourism involving residents traveling in another country.
Tourismhas become a popular global leisure activity. In 2008 there were over 922Million International tourist arrivals, with a growth of 1.9% as compared to2007. International tourism receipts grew to USS 944 billion (Euro 642 billion)in 2008, corresponding to an increase in real terms of 1.8%.
Tourism is vital for many countries,Egypt, Greece, Lebanon, Spain, Malaysia and Thailand and many island nations, such as the Bahamas, Fiji, Maldives, Philippines and the Seychelles due to thelarge intake of money for business with there good and services and opportunityfor employment in the service industries associated with tourism. These serviceindustries include transportation services such as accommodations includinghotels and resort and entertainment venues such as amusement parks, casinos, shoppingmalls, music venues and theaters.
Wealthy people have always travelled todistant parts of the worlds to see great buildings, works of art, learn newlanguages experience new cultures and to taste different cuisines. The world tourismwas used by 1811 and tourist by 1840. In 1936, the League of Nations defined foreigntourist as “someone traveling abroad for at least twenty – four hours”. Itssuccessor, the United Nations, amended this definition in 1945, by including amaximum stay of six months.
There has been an up market tend in the tourismover the last few decades, especially in Europe, where International Travel forshort breaks is common. tourists have high levels of disposable income, considerable leisure, time are well
Educatedand have sophisticated tastes. There is now a demand for a better quality products, which has resulted in a fragmenting of the mass market for breach vacations:people want more specialized versions, quieter resorts family, orientedholidays or niche market targeted destination hotels.

The development in technology andtransport infrastructure, such as jumbo jets, low cost airlines and moreaccessible airport have made many types of tourism more affordable The World TourismOrganizations (UNWTO)  forecasts thatinternational tourism will continue growing at average annual rate of 4%. Tourismproducts and services have made available through intermediaries although tourismprovides (Hotels, Airlines etc) can sell their services directly. This has putpressure on intermediaries from both Online and Traditional Shops.

Top sex stories of 2011

Posted by Stanly Stephen | 07:55 | , | 0 comments »

Now that I have you attention, let’s look back and see what made 2011 rock.

2011 has undoubtedly been the year of the voyeuristic Indian or ‘Herbert the Pervert’. He has used a numbers pile-driver to etch his name as the one with most impact on the country’s working. Sunny Leone, Poonam Pandey, Katrina Kaif, Veena Malik, Nargis Fakri and an array of many such sultry sirens were the most searched, watched, read and followed in any media format.

The country might have been melting in a pot of corruption, terrorism, border insecurity, pollution, inflation and overpopulation, but here we had the mighty ‘voyeur’ celebrating life. No doomsday can shake his devotion to his senses.

Heck, the ‘voyeur’ even scored big in the backdrop of one of the most sensitive Indo-Pak talks, making headlines for Hina Rabbani Khar’s what not!

India is full of a billion prudes who will smirk at the mention of the golden word ‘SEX’ but never accept it as a part of our so called ‘Indian Tradition’. This hypocrisy is easily brought to the fore with the raging TRPs on TV, hits on the internet, audiences tuning-in the radio, billboards and crowds (Poor Anna Hazare could not gather a decent gathering in Mumbai while a crowd of thousands thronged a swanky mall to see a ‘hot’ starlet kicking off the New Year celebration).

Let’s draw a few corollaries:

-The economy’s spine twisting 2G scam, along with Kanimozhi’s jail and bail could not generate as much interest as the promos and gossip of ‘The Dirty Picture’ and Aishwarya Rai’s pregnancy. People were simply not interested in the age old bane of corruption but hey, how can you convert the insatiable interest in anything that has to do with sex? The nation knows about Beti B while 2G would result in a ‘Hain ji?’ query across the length and breadth of the glorious country.

- Koodankulam Nuclear Protest stands nowhere in public interest and following when pitted against Poonam Pandey’s stripshows. After all, what has the issue of nuclear plants got to do with the ‘common aka voyeur man’ when he can watch a 19-year old strip proudly in front of a webcam. Even in places where food, electricity and water are a problem, Ms Pandey has made inroads.

-Even if we stick to cases of law and administration, the Bhanwari Devi murder full of sleaze is much more read and watched by Indians than the interlocutors on J&K’s AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act, in case you did not know that but can tell Katrina’s ZNMD from MBKD at the drop of the hat).

-India was facing the brunt of the ever so growing inflation but even here, the discerned ‘voyeur’ was frantically logging to the net, switching on TV, radios and flipping newspapers for news on extramarital affairs and saucy WAGs.

-The sexual escapades of Strauss Kahn and Silvio Berlusconi had more people talking during their lunch breaks over the year than the Arab Revolution. I vividly remember a friend who followed the Arab Revolution not for the democracy it would bring to millions, but for the ‘hot Arab chicks’ with ‘potential’. My stomach might have churned, but his clan churns big business for the media industry.

2011 was a year when a nation that condemns prostitution and on-screen sex turned putty into the hands of a porn star called Sunny Leone. And at what loving convenience! What was earlier a part of a few men’s hidden computer folders now became a dinner time family watch. School kids searched for her information on the net and lest I dare say, were treated to an awesome actress of another kind. Thanks to our responsible channels, which realised the need to ‘catch em young’ and have a supersized ‘voyeur’ community for the generation to come, we can now put everything on the backburner and serve sex first.

Here’s wishing the 2012 doomsday wishers good luck and a happy New Year because if this is the direction we would be treading on, it’s better to perish in an apocalypse.

Is Organic Beauty Better?

Posted by Stanly Stephen | 04:20 | | 0 comments »

Organic Beauty Products

By Maui R.

So many beauty companies have joined the “Green Revolution,” releasing beauty products that they claim are “natural” and “organic”. These products supposedly work just as hard, if not better, than their “chemical” counterparts.

There is, however, a price to getting beautiful the natural way – a hefty price tag at that – as these products cost double or triple. Which makes us ask the question: Are organic products really better, or are they all just hype?

First, let’s look at the facts: our skin is our largest organ, and it absorbs almost anything we put on it. Unfortunately, many of the beauty products we use contain chemicals that could be harmful to our bodies.

Pick up a beauty product and look at the list of ingredients at the back. Chances are, it’s filled with chemicals that you can’t even pronounce – and we’re willing to bet they contain ingredients like ethylparaben or propelyne glycol, which can be toxic in large amounts.

In fact, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, there are more than 5,000 different fragrances in beauty products, some a combination of chemicals that research has found could be harmful to other organs in the body.

Now if you’re thinking of going the “natural and organic” route, you should know that the two mean different things.

“Natural” products are in theory, made up of ingredients that are “existing” or come from nature. “Organic,” on the other hand, are made of ingredients that are grown or cultivated without the use of chemicals.

But is it really worth the extra dollars?

Well, it really depends on you – although going organic certainly has its benefits, especially if you have sensitive skin. That’s because our skin recognises and identifies with natural products. So, the fewer chemicals there are, the better it is.

Organic products also assure you that you won’t be exposing your skin to harmful chemicals such as parabens, which is used as preservatives in beauty products. Parabens have been found to cause metabolic, developmental, hormonal and neurological disorders.

There are also some people who patronise organic products for their social and environmental implications. The Mayo Clinic states that organic farming encourages soil and water conservation – non-organic products use petrochemicals that deplete the earth’s natural resources. Organic farming has also helped communities all over the world by providing jobs to locals.

But do organic products make a difference, beauty-wise? Many have said that organic products give the same results as its chemical-laced counterparts, and that it isn’t exactly more effective – which means what you’re really paying for is the peace of mind that you’re not exposing yourself to chemicals, and that you’re doing something good for the environment and society.

Also, organic products don’t have a long shelf life, since they don’t use industry-grade chemical preservatives.

Thinking about going the organic route? If you’ve got the extra cash to spare, by all means, go for it. But before you start grabbing products off the shelf, keep in mind that many companies call their products “organic” just because one or two of the ingredients they use are organic. The product itself however, still contains chemicals.

To make sure you’re getting the real thing, purchase products that are “certified organic.” This means that it has been certified by several international bodies, and follows the standard that 95% of the product must be made of organic ingredients.

However, you don’t really need to go organic just to take good care of your skin. Knowing what you feed your skin is the first step in proper skin care, which means get familiar with the ingredients of the products you use.

The next time you go shopping, pick products with few or no artificial ingredients. Always read the label to better understand what you’re buying –“derived from natural ingredients” obviously means the product is not “natural” at all. And besides, just because it’s “natural” doesn’t mean it’s safe (Hey, tobacco and poison ivy are “natural,” right?)

Laughter really is the best medicine

Posted by Stanly Stephen | 04:19 | | 0 comments »

A rattling good laugh with friends will help you deal with pain thanks to opiate-like chemicals that flood the brain, according to a British study released on Wednesday.
Researchers carried out lab experiments in which volunteers watched either comedy clips from "Mr Bean" or "Friends," or non-humorous items such as golf or wildlife programmes, while their resistance to mild pain was monitored.
Another test was conducted at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where the volunteers watched either a stand-up comedy show or a theatrical drama.
In lab conditions, the pain came from a deep-frozen wine-cooler sleeve which was slipped onto the arm or from a blood-pressure cuff that was pumped to the threshold of tolerance.
For the Fringe Festival, the volunteers were asked to do a tough exercise -- leaning against the wall with their legs at right angles, as if sitting on a straight-backed chair -- before and immediately after the performance, to see if laughter had helped with the pain.
Just 15 minutes of laughter increased the level of pain tolerance by around 10 percent, the study found.
In the lab experiments, the neutral, non-funny programming had no pain-alleviating effect at all. Nor did watching drama at the Fringe Festival.
However, the study notes two important distinctions.
The only laughter that worked was relaxed, unforced laughter that creases the eyes, as opposed to a polite titter.
And this kind of belly laugh is far likelier to happen when you are with others, rather than being alone.
"Very little research has been done into why we laugh and what role it plays in society," said Robin Dunbar, head of the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oxford.
"Using microphones, we were able to record each of the participants and found that in a comedy show, they laughed for about a third of the time, and their pain tolerance rose as a consequence."
The protection apparently comes from endorphins, a complex chemical that helps to transmit messages between neurons but also dulls signals of physical pain and psychological stress.
Endorphins are the famous product of physical exercise -- they help create the "buzz" that comes from running, swimming, rowing, yoga and so on.
In laughter, the release comes from an involuntary, repeated muscular exertion that comes from exhaling without drawing a breath, the scientists believe. The exertion leaves us exhausted and thereby triggers the endorphins.
Great apes are also believed to be able to laugh but, unlike humans, they breathe in as well as out when they do so.
The investigators believe the experiments help to understand the physiological and social mechanism of how laughter is generated.
The group seems vital in unleashing the right kind of endorphin-making laughter, they contend.
Previous studies have focussed more on why humans laugh, as opposed to how they do it.
One theory is that laughter helps transmit mating signals or cements bonding between individuals.
Another idea is that, in a group setting, laughter promotes social cooperation and collective identity. It is thus an evolutionary tool to help survival.
The paper appears in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, a journal published by Britain's de-facto academy of sciences.

Know the Risks Associated with Obesity
The unhealthy diets and haphazard lifestyles of the present times have contributed to an alarmingincrease in obesity rates in both kids and adults.
And it's not just a cosmetic problem. Obesity has also cropped up as a major health issue leading to a numerous ailments and complications. As per medical standards, if a person's Body Mass Index (BMI) is higher than 30, he or she is obese. At the moment, the condition has been elevated to a serious public health problem and is becoming a cause of many fatalities worldwide.
In this piece, we'll discuss some of the grave risks associated with obesity. For information on how to battle obesity, refer to our 'Weight Management' category under the 'Health' section. Recent studies indicate that an obese person is likely to develop one or more of these problems:

High Blood Pressure

Hypertension is strongly attached to obesity. Presence of additional body fat leads to the circulation of more blood to those tissues as they need oxygen and nutrients to survive. This requires the heart to pump more blood and in this process the work load on the heart and the pressure on the artery walls go up.
Know the Risks Associated with Obesity

Type 2 Diabetes

Non-insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, also called Type 2 Diabetes, is another common health problem among obese patients. Research data shows that such people are twice as likely to develop diabetes. This condition is one of the chief causes of early death, kidney disease, heart disease and even blindness.

Heart Diseases and Stroke

An obese person has 10 times more chances of developing atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) as compared to a non-obese person! Other heart ailments like Coronary Heart Disease (CAD) and heart attack are more common in bulky and obese people. Such people may also develop high blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides which is linked to a number of heart ailments and stroke.

Cancer

Overweight men are quite prone to developing cancer of the rectum, colon and prostrate, whereas women are likely to develop breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and cancer of the uterus.

Sleep Apnea

Know the Risks Associated with Obesity
This is a sleeping disorder in which the patient snores heavily and his breathing rate is abnormally low. The risk of sleep apnea increases with higher body weights but can be countered with lifestyle changes and effective weight-loss programs.

Osteoarthritis

Know the Risks Associated with Obesity
A fat person's joints have to withstand extra pressure. This can lead to the wearing out of the protective cartilage in between the joints, the condition being knows as Osteoarthritis. This is particularly seen in weight-bearing joints like knee, hips and lower back joints. This unnecessary pressure on joints can be lessened by regular weight loss exercise and a balanced diet.

8 important manners you should teach your little ones
We all want to raise our little ones to be polite and well behaved, and learning those lessons starts at home. It's never too early to teach your little ones basic manners! Here are eight of the most important manners you should try to teach your little ones before they go to school. They won't remember them all, or get them right every time, but patience and perseverance should get you through:
1.    Always say please and thank you.
Whether they're activities as small as giving your little one a snack, or them asking if they can play in the garden, always reinforce the importance of saying please and thank you. No matter how young your children are, you can't start enforcing this rule too early!
2.    Table manners
When your tiny tots are just learning to eat at the table, start teaching them the manners you'd like them to have for the rest of their lives! Rules like not eating with their mouths open, or not putting their elbows on the table, are good life lessons for your children to learn as soon as possible.
3.    Play dates
When you're little ones go on play dates, or to birthday parties, remind them to thank their friends parents for having them over. If you aren't going to be attending the play date or event with your little one, ensure your little ones know they should treat their friends parents (and all grown-ups) with the same respect they treat you.
4.    Birthday party etiquette
It's often said that kids go wild at birthday parties - all the sweet snacks and fun can make little ones get excited, and sometimes forget their manners. But no matter how excited your little one is on their birthday, there are some manners they shouldn't forget: to open their presents thoughtfully (not ripping off the paper, or tossing the present to one side as soon as they've seen it) and to say thank you for every gift, and to every attendee.
5.    Mind the language
There will come a moment every parent dreads: the moment your little one swears. And then finds it funny! The worst thing you can do in this scenario is laugh. Let them know that you already know that word, you think it's unpleasant, not funny, and ask your little one not to use it again!
6.    Don't be mean
Kids tease each other, and they find it funny. But this can sometimes go a step too far and lead to bullying. Make sure your little ones don't call others mean names, and don't make fun of anyone for any reason. Ganging up on someone else is cruel, not clever.
7.    Excuse me!
Once your little ones have mastered saying please and thank you, teach them to say excuse me. It's the polite thing to say when you have to interrupt someone, or bump into somebody.
8.    TMI!
There are some things that are too much information, and that your little ones shouldn't talk about in public! These include genitals, poo, nose picking, and all the other gory things that amuse kids!
